Let's Talk Textures
Share
When it comes to creating beautiful bundles, textures can play an important role. We love finding attractive textures and using them to add depth, interest, and balance to the overall look.
All of our bundles contain items with a wide variety of textures - from dotted glass jars to smooth stoneware vases and rustic stone jugs. Here are some of the things we think about when we're deciding which items work best together.

1. Textures that Contrast
One of the best ways to utilise texture when grouping items is to bring contrasts together. In this example, on the top shelf, we've selected a smooth, matt black stoneware vase, and positioned it next to a dotted glass jar and a shiny, glazed ceramic jug. We've also paired a ribbed black ceramic planter with a rough, aged-effect stone jug.
Contrasting textures like this can help to avoid a grouping looking flat and one-dimensional. Instead, it builds visual interest, and allows the individual characteristics of each item to really stand out.
2. Textures that Repeat
We also like to ensure that across the collection, there is repetition of textures to create an overall harmonious and balanced look. Here, we've echoed the use of textured glass on the top and bottom shelves, creating continuity. The same can be said for the repeating materials of ceramic, terracotta and stoneware.
3. Tactile Patterns
We love introducing pattern to our bundles, especially when they look intriguing to touch, and change appearance depending on the light and shade in the room. The taupe, geometric vase on the bottom shelf has diamond shaped indents that work their way upwards from the base of the vase, with the indents creating areas of dark shadow and the grooves reflecting flashes of light. In addition, the intricate linear pattern on the grey vase next to it is more detailed, but also has a beautiful appearance that is enhanced with the wavy glimmer created by light and shade.
4. Raw and Natural Finishes
It's useful to ensure that not all the items in the bundle have a perfect, man-made quality. Instead, the imperfections of a more natural finish can provide just the kind of unique, rustic beauty and interest the collection needs. Natural textures, such as rough, grainy stone and earthy terracotta can add a sense of organic beauty to your home accessory groupings.
5. Textures through Art
Another tactic is to add texture through artwork. In the example above, our original linear ink artwork, which sits in the 4x6 Black Nickel frame, has been printed on textured paper. Each one has been printed individually by hand, so there are slight variations in each repeated black line, which give a more interesting appearance, not only to the artwork itself but to the bundle as a whole.
6. Subdued Hues
Finally, by selecting neutral colours that don't overwhelm, it ensures that the stunning variations in texture get all the attention they deserve. The subtlety of tones use ensures no colour jumps out and dominates as the most prominent aspect of the collection - instead, there's a well-balanced, multi-dimensional overall effect achieved with textures that are rough and smooth, matt and gloss, light and shadow, pattern and plain, solid and opaque.
